Vote No!

Fuji S7000 @ 27mm, 1/120 sec, f/8, ISO 200
Previous · Current · Next

Same camera as yesterday, same extravagant lighting setup, but not as good or effective. The "VOTE NO" is a reference to the mini campaign going on in our village at the moment. A housing developer is wanting to double the size of our little village... our community must be saved from these evil people! :oP

My Pet Dog

Fuji S7000 @ 37mm (35mm equiv), 1/250 sec, f/8, ISO 200
Previous · Current · Next

Well, it's as close as I've got. The recently relegated Fuji came back out for some macro action tonight. It really does have a good macro function - this shot was taken about an inch in front of the dog. The quality lighting is thanks to a very inexpensive desk lamp from IKEA.

Walking down one of the streets connecting George square to Argyll Street and I saw this trolley. Half expected to find a homeless man to be curled up in the carpet, but no such luck.

I'll be moving through to Edinburgh this summer so I went through and had a look at some properties with my parentals. It was nice to see all of the flats that I won't be able to afford.

Chatelherault

Nikon D70 @ 60 mm, 1/1000 sec, f/4.5, ISO 200
Previous · Current · Next

Had to miss a couple of days posts - exams and other things kept me busy so the camera didn't get much use. Anyway, today I did my first photography job. I wasn't being paid, and the client was my girlfriend, but still...

My girlfriend wanted some pics of her and her brother to give to their mum for her birthday, so we went to Chatelherault in Hamilton. The lighting for this shot wasn't ideal - the sun was a little too bright. Thankfully I shot in RAW so I was able to fill in some of the shadows in post.

Exam Time

Ah, it's that time again when I actually have to do some work for uni. Got an exam on Wednesday, can you guess which one? It's multiple choice and open book... that's almost insulting, isn't it? Now, if I can just figure out how to use that index...

Let me introduce my brother, Andrew. When he's not reading philosophy or contemplating the meaning of his existence, he's playing the guitar. Walked into his bedroom tonight and liked the lighting produced by his desklamp. Shot handheld at ISO 1600 hence the nice 'grain' (sounds much better than noise).

Absolutely love my new 50mm f/1.8 for portrait shots. Incredibly sharp at f/2.8 and the shallow depth of field is great. This shot was taken by a window on an overcast day, using available light only.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Nikon D70 @ 27mm, 30 sec, f/10, ISO 200
Previous · Current · Next

So today I just stayed in to study, so there weren't any decent photo ops. But I did manage to get my brother to sit still for about 10 minutes while I tried another painting with light technique. Same as last time - a dark room, a torch, and a 30 second exposure. I know this could probably be done better with an external flash, but hey, I haven't got one. Until then, the torch will have to do...

Painting with Light

Tried the painting with light technique for the first time on a portrait shot. Shot in a dark room, using nothing but a torch to light up the subject. Gotta try this again sometime - can get really cool results, but it's a little difficult to get the hang of.

This image is a combination of about 25 separate images, set at different opacities. It was taken at Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow.

Erskine Golf Club

Nikon D70 @ 18mm, 1/50 sec, f/13, ISO 200
Previous · Current · Next

I got up early this morning again (6am this time) to go up to Erskine Golf Club with my friend. It was obviously too early for him as I had to wake him up. We got up there eventually, but it wasn't very exciting - inspiration was lacking. We ventured onto the golf course but even that wasn't great.

At one point the greenkeeper walked past us. We thought he was going to ask us to leave, but instead he walked by as if seeing 2 people with their tripods out on the golf course at 7 in the morning was an every day event!

I think I'll have a lie in tomorrow.

My friend's uncle, Andy Currie, has just started his own business doing photography tours of Scotland (www.scottishphototours.com) and gave us a 'freebie' today. The only problem was I had to get up at 4:45am! Now that's dedication for you.

Anyway, it was an excellent day - the weather was really good to us and it was nice taking pictures all day. Andy certainly knew his stuff and knew all the best places to go - it was a great learning experience.

I think I came back with some pretty nice pictures and I'll have to have a couple of them printed big. If you want to have a look at some other pictures from the day click here.

Glasgow Uni

I graduated from Glasgow with my law degree last summer so this is a pretty special place to me. I always love photographing the old buildings, but the lighting has never been very good to me. I had some time to kill today and had been wandering around this area, probably for about an hour. The sun had been hiding so the pictures weren't looking great. Then it decided to make an appearance, and bang, I got this one. Hope you like it.
