My first day of the summer holidays and I'm back at uni! I just had to pick up something so it was a good excuse to get some pictures. I jumped a fence to get down beside the water and saw the uni from an angle I've never seen before.

The end of my exams, the end of university, but, the start of my summer holidays. It's been a busy couple of weeks cramming for my exams, but I managed to get through them all without any major problems. Hopefully I can still say that when I get my results back.

I managed to keep taking a few pics every day and have now managed to update the site for the last week or so.

Now, 4 months of freedom before I enter the real world... what shall I do?

At the moment absolutely nothing sounds good!

Was I caught out, or is he just a big poser really? Hmmm... I wonder :) He said this was one of his favourite photos of himself, so I must have done something right. Portrait photography is all about capturing a moment, or part of someone's personality, and I like what I got in this one.

I brought this home from Athens last summer... it's a simple stone ornament of a mother and child, made in the same style as Cycladic art. I was looking out of the window for something interesting to photograph, but this caught my eye when I looked down.

Copper Lizard

It suddenly dawned on me today that I could reverse my 50mm lens and take some very close macro shots. I didn't realise the amount of magnification you could get doing this (I still can't see any dust on the lizard's tongue!). I usually love having a very shallow depth of field, but in these shots there's only about 2mm in focus! This was a small ornamental lizard my brother brought back from Thailand. I only took a few shots with this set up... I'll have to play about with it a little more when I've got more time.

My girlfriend was complaining that I never take photos of my parents. Well it's mainly because they're unwilling (nothing can ever be my fault). I also prefer natural candid shots and my mum has a tendency to strike her best model pose whenever she sees a camera :)

However, I persevered and was happy to get this shot.

My gran looked after me a lot when i was younger, so i've always been close to her, and get on with her really well. It also helps that she's a little bit crazy and will always put up with my annoying behaviour (include photography in that).

She was sitting at our kitchen table this morning and i liked the lighting coming through the window from an overcast sky, so naturally i ran upstairs and grabbed my camera. As soon as she saw the camera it was as if she turned into a child and started pulling a while load of silly faces. It must be great to be her age and still getting a lot of fun out of life.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun to shoot, and probably even more fun seeing the end results. I've got a few more to go through (quite busy with exams just now) that i'll link to eventually.

In all seriousness, these were probably some of my favourite photographs ever taken!

New Guitar

Been a bit slow to update the site in the last few days... still got another couple to put up. This is yet another shot of my brother playing his guitar (a new classical one nonetheless). I think it the serious expression of concentration on his face that always makes these portraits interesting to shoot.

Boring days result in boring shots. Just stayed in and attempted to do some studying (ha). This is a shot of some raindrops on my patio door... the rain had just stopped and the blue sky was trying to come out.

Glasgow Cathedral

I had to go up to Strathclyde uni to pick something up, and thought I'd go to see the Glasgow Cathedral. It's been years since I last saw it, and forgot what an amazing building it is. I also completely forgot that the Glasgow Necropolis existed just behind it.

Anyway, I was quite disappointed when I got there because they were working on the path just in front of the main doors (big JCB and many workmen) so that ruined the "classic" shot of the building. However, I'm quite glad of it, because it meant I had to get a shot of it from a different, more unusual angle. So I jumped over some railings and got this shot.

It was my girlfriend's mum's birthday today, and she gave her the photographs I had taken of her and her brother. Here are the pictures:

Colour · B&W 1 · B&W 2 · B&W 3

The colour was printed at 15" x 10" and the quality was amazing. I was really surprised - no noise or pixelation at all. The B&W were printed at 7" x 5" and looked great in chunky wooden frames.

I think I can safely assume that she liked them... even a few tears were shed (in a good way). I think I'm in her good books for a while, and I was invited out to dinner with the family in Glasgow. The shot above was a quick one I got of Buchanan street, resting the camera on a bollard. I'll definitely be going back into town sometime to get some proper night shots of the city.

Took a few quick shots of my thermometer. My IKEA desklamp has certainly been getting good use recently. I quite like this shot, and definitely think there's potential for it to be really good if I can spend more time on the set up.

80, and still having fun

I decided to go for a more traditional approach with this portrait of my gran. Yes. Eighty years old, and still having fun. If I'm half as good natured as my gran when I'm that age I'll be happy.

So I was just taking a few sneaky shots of her when she was eating a scone, and then she put a raisin in front of her teeth. That descended into pulling a series of funny faces. I laughed which made her laugh more, and this was repeated until finally I got this, somewhat disturbing, shot.

I think I've fallen in love with this camera again. Not having a proper macro lens for my DSLR definitely makes me appreciate the macro function of the Fuji all the more.
