Kelvingrove Art Gallery

Nikon D70 @ 40mm, 10 sec, f/4.5, ISO 200

Quick update before I go to me bed! Going away to Berwick for a few days so hopefully I'll come back with a few nice shots. It's actually forecast for snow tomorrow here in Edinburgh, so I might get up early and have a wander here first :)

Anyway, this is the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum (in case you can't read that at the bottom of the photo). Taken from beside the main building at Glasgow uni.

Back Home

Nikon D70 @ 69mm, 1.6 sec, f/11, ISO 200
Previous · Current · Next

It's the end of my holidays already - how did that happen!! Well, I've only got to work tomorrow and Thursday, so it's not that bad. But I can't quite figure out how the last few days have gone by so quickly!

Anyway, I hope that everyone enjoyed/is enjoying their holidays.

On to the photos...

Went home for Christmas, so I thought I'd stop by my old uni and get some night shots of the main building. I ended up spending about 3 hours there (don't quite know how) and only came away with about 3 shots I like. That seems to be the case with most of my shoots these days, but so long as I get one good one I'm happy! This one was taken from inside the quadrangles of the main building, with the two towers in the distance belonging to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery.

Star Gazing

Nikon D70 @ 18mm, 496.7 sec, f/10, ISO 200
Previous · Current · Next

Ended up having a half day at work today (woo), which gave me the perfect excuse to go for a wander with my camera. I ended up going straight to Carlton Hill to get a shot looking down Princes Street just as the sun was going down. Unfortunately the sunset was a bit of a non-event, so the shots weren't that great. I was actually taking those shots with my Fuji S7000 because my 18-70 lens is the longest I've got for my D70 at the moment (got my eye on the sigma 80-400 OS though - it will be mine!). I forgot how nice it is to use a camera with a live preview.

Anyway, the sky was clear over head, so I thought I might be able to get some star trails. I ended up waiting for about half an hour for the sun to go down fully, and for the sky to be dark enough. I used an 8 minute exposure for this one and am incredibly impressed with the lack of noise in the image - seriously, there is no more than there is for a typical day light shot. I'm always amazed at the detail that comes out in these shots, bearing in mind that it was completely dark.

Just about to head home for Christmas, so if I don't update before then... have a good one! :)

Took this shot on the same morning as this one, at the top of Arthur's seat just as the sun was rising.

Fitness First

Nikon D70 @ 70mm, 1/400 sec, f/10, ISO 200

Something a little different today, in case you were getting bored of all the night shots of late. Took this one for someone's fitness website and they were delighted with it. One SB-800 set on a tripod behind the girl aimed directly at the wall behind her.

The last three shots have been from practically the same spot, but I've just used different focal lengths for each.

The Castle

Nikon D70 @ 70mm, 1/4 sec, f/4.5, ISO 200
Previous · Current · Next

I had a late afternoon wander around the centre today, expecting to get some shots of all the festivities going on. But I ended up circling round Princes Gardens a couple of times, not being able to pick out any shots I wanted - there were either too many distracting lights or else the scene was just too busy.

So it was a good job that there was a nice sunset to keep me busy! I took this shot from the mound, where I stood for about 45 mins freezing my bollocks off, waiting to get the shot. My early shots gave me a distinct silhouette of the castle, but I prefer this shot that was taken later on when the lights came on - I like the balance between the ambient and artificial light.

It was interesting to see how many other people were out today with their tripod - they were like moths to the bright lights of the city!

Your comments are appreciated on this one.

Cheers

Little Squirrel

Nikon D70 @ 70mm, 1/60 sec, f/4.5, ISO 200
Previous · Current · Next

Took this one on Saturday in the Botanic Gardens. I was amazed at how tame the squirrels were - they were coming right up to me when I was crouching down. One little guy even came up from behind me and had a peek to see what was in my camera bag.

Wildlife shots aren't my cup of tea, so I had to have a play in PS with this one to make it a little more interesting :)

New Day

Nikon D70 @ 22mm, 1/125 sec, f/3.8, ISO 200
Previous · Current · Next

I was taking some shots for someone's website on Sunday, which involved catching a sun rise at the top of Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh. It was a slightly strange experience walking up the hill (which is actually quite steep!) with all my camera gear in the darkness. But thankfully we were rewarded with a very nice sunrise. In fact, it's the first weekend in about a month where the weather was actually decent.

Back!

Nikon D70 @ 18mm, 1/10 sec, f/22, ISO 200

It's excuses time again - been quite a while since my last update, but it's been the results of being busy at work and spending the rest of my time on photos for other people. So just a quick update using a shot I took a few weeks ago while at South Queensferry. Lovely little place that I'll definitely be going back to, if only to get some shots of the Forth Rail Bridge in better light.

Festivities

Nikon D70 @ 18mm, 8 sec, f/10, ISO 200
Previous · Current · Next

Finally, a couple of hours of free time to relax and do whatever I want. Quite sad then, that I chose to spend that time fixing this site! I've created an account with Flickr and have now uploaded all of the photos which vanished from my john.stuwee site - so all my previous posts should be working as normal now.

I took this shot at Princes gardens where they've got quite a festive show on. I was initially drawn to this shot because of the lighting on the steps, and was quite amazed to find a composition that worked so well. I had to wait quite a while to get a clear shot with no people on the stairs, and also for the rides to be going at the right speed. I was quite amazed to be troubled by only the one wee ned who, quite harmlessly, said "if ah say cheese, will ya take ma picture?" Hmmm... let me think about that one.

Longing

Nikon D70 @ 40mm, 1/50 sec, f/16, ISO 200
Previous · Current · Next

Hey guys!

Haven't updated in quite a while... possibly the longest I've gone without updating this site actually. I've been really busy at work which never helps matters. But the main reason is that I've been spending most of my free time working on pictures for various clients - I think with Christmas coming up everyone is looking to buy pictures!

Anyway, I thought I'd post this picture 'cos this is where I wanna be - up in Glencoe taking some landscapes. Since I moved through to Edinburgh I've only been able to take street shots and it feels like ages since I was last out in the countryside.

I think a trip up North is needed!
